Why Anacostia?
Anacostia is more than a neighborhood—it is a sacred site of history and resilience. It is home to Barry Farm, where formerly enslaved people settled and built new lives after emancipation. The laborers who constructed the Capitol and the White House once lived in this community. Anacostia and the East of the River neighborhoods have also been stewards of the land, holding a rich environmental legacy often overlooked in mainstream narratives.
The Anacostia River, once used to divide, now becomes a bridge—connecting us in reflection, celebration, and purpose. Through this walk, we honor our past while investing in the thriving present and future of our community.
